Coral gardens to be organized in three UAE emirates

The authorities of the United Arab Emirates are preparing a unique eco-project - coral gardens.

The UAE Ministry of Climate and Environmental Change has launched the creation of three coral gardens with a total area of 850 sq. m in the emirates of Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Ajman.

Saleh Al Geziri, director general of the Ajman Tourism Development Department, said the ministry is working on ecosystem restoration to provide a natural habitat for several marine species.

“This will help ensure a significant increase in fish stocks,” he explained.

Salah Abdullah Al-Raisi, director of the Department of Sustainable Development of Fisheries of the Ministry, said that this project will significantly increase the sustainability of natural ecosystems, preserve biodiversity and reduce the effects of climate change.

He added that this initiative contributes to the conservation of biodiversity in the country and helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by carbon dioxide isolation.

Dr. Saif Muhammad Al-Ghais, Director General of the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Environment and Development, confirmed that coral gardens conserve fish stocks.

"The department, in collaboration with the ministry, has already cultivated 650 species of coral and created 703 artificial caves as part of our strategy to expand marine biodiversity in the emirate," he said.

Last month, the ministry announced two environmental initiatives dedicated to the Year of Zayed. The first initiative is the planting of 30 thousand mangroves, and the second is the cultivation of coral gardens intended for the development of coastal and marine areas in the UAE
