Pasquale Bruni - Master of Form

Interviewed by Irina Malkova

ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS JEWELERS OF MODERNITY PASCUAL BRUNI IN AN INTERVIEW TO OUR MAGAZINE TOLD THAT WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO VALUE THE IMPROVEMENT AND HOW ANDREA BOCHELLI FIND IT ON YOU TO UNDERSTAND.

Mr. Bruni, from the very beginning I want to ask: is jewelry your destination? You wanted to become a jeweler since childhood?

Pasquale Bruni: I started sketching future products from the age of 13. Of course, I ran with the boys in the yard and played football, but then I came home and sat down to draw - I invented and fantasized. Then I lived in the south of France, near the sea. And when the sea was raging, I wanted to calm him down, to pacify him. To do this, I painted a woman, a beautiful woman, who mentally contrasted the raging elements. I wanted her to defeat her. Femininity, and generally feminine, I contrasted with nature. Beauty, in my understanding, should have softened the "wrath of the gods." Therefore, in my drawings I decorated the woman with attributes of power - rings, amulets, precious bracelets. I believed that they would add strength, energy and beauty to her. So, probably, I became a jeweler.

If you endow female beauty with such power, then how do you see it?

Pasquale Bruni: I believe that there is no perfection in nature. And it is some kind of small imperfect trait that makes a woman beautiful and special. I prefer to see a woman natural, without any plastic surgery and tons of makeup. Same thing with stones. When a client asks to make some change in the stone, to cut it differently, I always say: "Yes, we can do it, but something in it will be lost forever." Just as if a woman undergoes plastic surgery, something in her will change. She will lose a part of herself, her natural originality, divine design.

One of your loyal client from Russia once told me: "Jewelry from Pasquale Bruni is for women who are in love." Do you agree with that?

Pasquale Bruni: Of course, I am glad to hear this and I can not disagree. Although we make jewelry for all women.

What would you say about your jewelry to those who are not yet familiar with your collections?

Pasquale Bruni: Our jewelry is primarily playful. These are the jewelry that can be worn every day. In addition, the products have hidden parts that you will not immediately discover - only after some time. This applies to the back of the rings, tacking, etc. We pay special attention to this. Our Jewelry House is also famous for its animalistic collections. In the first place for me is the form. On the second - the modular principle of construction: when I come up with some kind of original concept, then the resulting design can then be used in other jewelry. It’s like fractal geometry - a small piece repeats itself in the entire jewelry, for example, in a necklace.

Who is Pasquale Bruni's main creative "heart"?

Pasquale Bruni: Sometimes I, sometimes my daughter Eugene, who is the creative director of our House. An idea cannot be born right away, it takes time for it to mature and be embodied in the correct form.

Both your daughter and your son (gemologist) work with you. Is it not every father’s dream - that children work in the family business?

Pasquale Bruni: Of course, this is great! Generational continuity always works and always brings results. In addition, I know for sure who will continue my business.

Your daughter has repeatedly said that you are a role model for her.

Pasquale Bruni: To be an example for her is incredibly difficult! (laughs). I am something between an architect and a jeweler. I like working with forms more, and Eugenia likes to come up with design, as her imagination and imagination are endless. Between us is a strategic partnership.

You often admitted that you love classical music. And once at a concert by Andrea Bocelli, you got the idea to create one of your iconic things - a pendant in the form of a jewelry match. It's true?

Pasquale Bruni: How did you find out about this? Even Bocelli himself probably does not know this. But it really is! He has a song called Vivo Per Lei ("I Live for Her"). This is a wonderful, very beautiful song, and somehow, listening to it at Andrea’s concert, I thought: what if I create a pendant or a brooch in the form of a match with the symbolic name “Light Me”, because the song has such words? According to the idea, a match should light a fire in a person’s heart.

A bold step is to make a match a piece of jewelry!

Pasquale Bruni: A match is a symbol of fire, and fire is a symbol of passion. This is not just a match, it is an invitation to light a fire, a call to love. After all, love is the motor of life, the most important thing that people have. Therefore, the whole collection, I admit, is very dear to me.
