The plot of the Disney musical "Beauty and the Beast" was based on the 1991 animated film, awarded the British Academy Award.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1994, where it went for 13 years and was nominated for the prestigious Tony Awards in nine categories. The production is still considered one of the most profitable shows with a long rental history in the history of Broadway. The musical was staged in 22 countries and translated into 8 languages, the total audience worldwide amounted to more than 35 million people! The music for the musical was created by composer Alan Mencken (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Rapunzel: A Tangled Story), and the lyrics by Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin), already worked on additional songs for the production as a co-author with Tim Rice (“The Lion King”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Aida”). The script was written by Linda Wolverton (who worked on the libretto for the projects "The Lion King", "Alice in Wonderland" and "Maleficent").
