The first talking ATM for the blind launched in the UAE

In the emirate of Sharjah, the first talking ATM was installed for blind and visually impaired people.

The first "talking" ATM in the UAE for the blind and visually impaired was launched in the emirate of Sharjah, UAE, on Monday, January 8.

The new device is equipped with a large Braille display in Arabic and English and a voice interface (also in both languages). Sound comes through both speakers and headphones for greater privacy. The ATM also has three security cameras instead of one in ordinary ATMs.

The new ATM, launched by Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB), allows the blind and visually impaired to complete all transactions without assistance.

The device is also suitable for wheelchair users. The opening ceremony on Monday was attended by Sheikh Jamel Bint Muhammad Al Qasimi, CEO of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS); Muhammad Abdullah, CEO of SIB; and other senior representatives of the bank.

Sheikh Jamela said: “We are proud of the continued achievements of the Emirate of Sharjah, made possible by the vision of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, a member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah, in turning the emirate and all its cities and suburbs into an ideal place to live for people with disabilities and all walks of life.
