The account on the beads

Interviewed: Elena Olkhovskaya

The history of the Mazlo jewelry house dates back to 1470. Then the young and gifted jewelry maker and alchemist Georgius Saeh el-Mazlum, who was born in Byblos, leaves the Levant and sets off to seek happiness in Venice. There he opens a small workshop, which became the basis for the Mazlo Jewelery, perhaps the oldest jewelry house in the world, founded in the 15th century and still gives joy to people. The cornerstone of the philosophy of Mazlo jewelers was the creation of unique jewelry and custom-made products, and not just like that, but after the customer passed the "alchemical test" and compiled his psychological portrait. Mazlo House is still convinced that only jewelry reflecting its owner’s inner world can bring happiness, attract good fortune and wealth, protect it from the evil eye.

Today, Mazlo Jewelery's headquarters and workshops are located in Paris, in the center of the world of fine jewelry, and over the past 30 years, the company has been led by Robert Mazlo, a descendant of the brand’s founders and the gifted master jeweler himself. We met with Robert Mazlo in Dubai, where he presented a new collection made exclusively for the Tanagra chain of stores and consisting mainly of rosaries.

Robert, why exactly with the help of rosary do you try to express the philosophy of high jewelry art and convey it to every customer?

Firstly, because the rosary is the only piece of jewelry that is constantly in contact with the hands of its owner, which means that the stones and metals used in their manufacture can transmit all their strength to a person. Secondly, because all over the world, in all religions, and especially in the East, in countries where Islam is practiced, the rosary is not only an object necessary for worshipers, but also a sign of the owner’s special status. Beads from Mazlo Jewelery - it is always only handmade, only exceptional, carefully selected stones and accompanying materials, only what is intended for each specific buyer.

Why do you present your collections on the Tanagra network? What connects you with this brand?

It's simple, once I made a rosary commissioned by Anthony Chalhoub, founder and then owner of the Chalhoub Group, which owns Tanagra stores. We argued with Anthony that I could not convey in the beads all the versatility of his character. I assured him that I could, he in turn promised me to always carry a Mazlo rosary with me, no matter what I offered him as a result. A few months later I brought a rosary in which each bead consisted of different precious stones, fastened together like a mosaic - rubies, diamonds, lapis lazuli, sapphires. So I saw Anthony. He was surprised, thanked and was going to hide my gift in a safe. I reminded him of the promise to wear a rosary, and he took them with him to an important business meeting. The next day he called me and said that during the meeting he took out the rosary from his pocket, and all the attention of the audience was riveted to him. Anthony then managed to make a very important deal. Since then, Mazlo's rosary and jewelry have occupied a place of honor in the expositions of Tanagra stores, as they are able to bring good luck to their owners, and I am friends with the new generation of the Chalhoub family. And this is very symbolic, because it is no coincidence that in Arabic the rosary is called "misbaha", which means "family, group".

What sets Mazlo Jewelery apart from others?

Muslim rosaries usually number 99 (according to the number of names of Allah), 33 or 11 beads and a pendant. Traditional rosaries consist of eleven balls, then a jumper (oval grain, flat circle, etc.) and then again the same sequence to the specified number of balls. This is based on the fact that prayer among Muslims consists of eleven parts. I like to make beads from unevenly cut or turned stones, so each bead leaves a certain mark in the memory of a person who is praying or just lost in thought. I believe in the principles of the "golden section". The rosary organizes the way of thinking, calms, helps to streamline speech, especially if made of "your" stones. This distinguishes Mazlo beads, as any person will find their own decoration among them and give themselves a sense of true harmony with the world.

In parting, Robert Mazlo asked me to take a short test, during which it turned out that my talisamns were lapis lazuli and moonstone. Right with me, these two pebbles were gathered by the hands of the master into a funny pendant on a leather cord. Robert asked me to wear an amulet, which will certainly bring good luck and protect against evil influences from the outside. Thanking for the conversation, I left, and the idea of buying a rosary from dark blue lapis lazuli from Mazlo Jewelery has not left me until now ...
